1,000 lakes, a canal and Årjäng's market

Årjäng municipality with its approximately 10,000 inhabitants and its abundance of lakes is located in scenic southwestern Värmland. Dalsland's canal runs like a blue vein through the entire municipality and all the way into Vänern. The municipality is centrally located along the E18, between Karlstadand Oslo. Our location means that we are close to the international airport Gardermoen outside Oslo and to Karlstad AirportÅrjäng's marketwith its 50,000-100,000 visitors definitely is the highlight of the year. The third weekend in September each year, the market is set up. In connection with the market there is also a trotting race on Nordmarken's trotting track, which is also home to a unique trotting museum. The roots of the market date back to the 17th century.

Enjoy hiking in the Glaskogen Nature Reserve, which has a total of 30 kilometres of hiking trails. For cycling enthusiasts there is a wide selection of winding gravel roads that take you along lakes, through forests and open landscapes. Sport fishing in our lakes and ponds is world-class and attracts visitors from near and far. Perch and pike (really big ones) are our most common species, but the availability of game fish is also good.

In Årjäng's centre, Årjängstrolletflaunts its height of 8 metres and 3.5 metres’ shoe size! We also proudly present our fantastic murals from the Artscape street art festival, which adorn two of our house walls. Here you can also enjoy a three kilometres long sculpture walk. It starts in the city centre and ends at the traditional Kyrkeruds Folkhögskola. Kyrkerud also holds popular summer courses ranging from writing short stories, photography and sculpting to watercolour painting and burning raku.

Do you like golfing? Go for a round of golf at Årjäng Golf Course. It is beautifully located by Svensbysjön in Sillerud.

Årjäng has Sweden's most beautiful trotting track. 18 competitions take place here each year, and in mid-July it is time for Hästkrafthelgen.  It's a real fair with horsepower on wheels in the form of rallysprints in central Årjäng and an exhibition of beautiful vintage cars. The weekend of course also includes horsepower on hooves. On V75 day, 12,000 trotting enthusiasts gather to cheer on their favourites. If you are interested in the history of trotting horses, be sure to visit Nordiska Travmuseet, the closest neighbour to the trotting track.

A shopping tour usually turns out to be a popular distraction, and we have skilled artisans, nice little shops and shopping centres in our region.

If you are looking for a little more excitement, we can recommend a visit to Långelanda tingshus- Sweden's oldest preserved ting house. In 1865, the priest Anders Lindbäck was brought to trial here after attempting to poison his congregation members by mixing the Communion wine with arsenic.

Restaurants and food

Are you craving a snack? At the locks area in central Töcksfors lies the Watersiderestaurant, which has been recommended by the White Guide for several years. At Thorill'stiny restaurant in Holmedal, locally-produced dishes are at the top of the menu. A whiskey tasting at Nordmarkens Destilleriin Holmedal makes for yet another extroardinary experience.

The statue in Blomskog, Borgåsgubben, is supposed to have been built in the 17th century in order to simulate a living guard and thus scare away enemies. The hill on which the statue stands offers a great view of lake Västra Silen.

The Lennartsfors flight of locksis one of the most impressive in Dalsland's canal. The locks have been blasted into the mountain with dynamite and are followed by a mountain canal with high edges. The flight consists of three locks with a total level difference of 7.5 metres. Here you will experience a cultural environment that brings history to life. Fun trivia: Our skiing legend Thomas Wassberg is born in Lennartsfors!

Hotel and Camping

Why not check in at Turistgårdenin Töcksfors, at the Best Western Hotelin central Årjäng or maybe even at the 1st class railroad car at Sillerud station?
